RAISE THE FLAG FOR ARMED FORCES DAY
Monday 24th June 2024 in the Grounds of Oakham Castle

 

A flag raising ceremony to mark the start of the week leading up to Armed Forces Day is taking place in the grounds of Oakham Castle on Monday 24th June. This year the flag will be raised by personnel from 1 Royal Anglian Regiment based at Kendrew Barracks.

This annual event in the Rutland calendar follows the success of the first ever national Armed Forces Day in 2009. Traditionally the Armed Forces Flag is raised on Government buildings and landmarks at 10.30am at the start of the week leading up to Armed Forces Day itself, which this year is the 29th June.

Those attending should arrive at Oakham Castle by 10.10am as the brief ceremony will start promptly at 10.20am.

There is no need to confirm attendance; this event is open for all members of the community to attend.

Parking will not be permitted in the Castle Grounds.

Making the most of light evenings meet at 6:30pm on Friday, 21st June at the church porch.

Followed by a bring your own picnic in the orchard of 3 Main Street.

RIDLINGTON’S HISTORIC MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

RIDLINGTON’S HISTORIC MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS  –  a talk by Martin Wall on Friday 14 June at 7.30pm

 

Ridlington Church is very proud of its historic musical instruments, which are displayed on the church’s west wall. These instruments, a violin, a flute, three clarinets and an unusual bassoon, were in  use in the church in the 19th century.

This little band, together with a group of singers, would lead the congregation’s singing from a gallery on the west wall.

Martin’s talk will explain a little of the history of these instruments and how they were used.

CHURCH NEWS

PAROCHIAL CHURCH MEMBERS

Following the Annual Parochial Church Meeting the Members of the PCC are – Richard Allen, Louise Fox, Steve Fox, Debra Thatcher (churchwarden), Richard Thatcher and Margie Wall.

 

CHURCH FUNDRAISING – Teas will be served on four  summer Sunday afternoons from July 21st – August 11th. These will be held in the Village Hall using their facilities.  Offers of help to serve, wash up, bake etc to Debra Thatcher.

 

ANNUAL GRAND BOTTLE TOMBOLA –  Sincere thanks for all the generous donations for the “For Rutland Tombola” at the Rutland County Show on 2nd June.

CHURCHES COUNT IN NATURE

THE GREAT BIG GREEN WEEK/CHURCHES COUNT IN NATURE

Our annual bug hunt and bio-blitz in the churchyard will start at 11:15 on Sunday, 9th June. 

Please help us to count the birds, moths, butterflies, “creepy crawlies” and plants that combine to create this wonderful, peaceful, bio-diverse space.

Light refreshments will be available.

The crisps have passed the taste test!  The British Crisp Co. use British potatoes, are gluten free and have recyclable packaging.  Not available in supermarkets, sold on-line by the box.

EARLY JUNE WALK – HEBE’S WOOD BRAUNSTON

EARLY JUNE WALK – Hebe’s Wood Braunston – Tuesday, 4th June at 5:00 pm

By kind invitation of the owners we have been invited to walk in Hebe’s Wood again to enjoy the amazing sight of many orchids in bloom and to round off the evening with a bring your own picnic.  It was a fantastic evening last year and the orchids were beautiful.

Please let Karen Baines or Debra Thatcher know if you would like to join us this year and/or if you need a lift. We’ll meet at Wood Lane Farm, Braunston by the piggeries at 5pm.

Please note the invitation is to guests of the two-legged variety – the dogs will be able to join us on the walk on the evening of 21st June.
